I consume Atarax every night after meal following the instructions from doctor.Atarax

ATARAX is indicated to assist in the management of anxiety in adults.

Atarax is indicated for the management of pruritus(intense itching sensation) associated with acute and chronic urticaria, including cholinergic and physical types, and atopic and contact dermatitis in adults and children.

Hives are raised, often itchy, red welts on the surface of the skin. They are usually an allergic reaction to food or medicine.

Symptoms: Itching; Swelling of the surface of the skin into red- or skin-colored welts

Antihistamines are the most common treatment for hives.

Derma= skin (greek)

itis = inflammation

dermatitis = inflammation of skin

CONTACT DERMATITIS is a condition in which the skin becomes red, sore, or inflamed after direct contact with a substance. There are two kinds of contact dermatitis: irritant or allergic.

Treatment for contact dermatitis

1.Treatment includes washing with lots of water to remove any traces of the irritant that may remain on the skin. You should avoid further exposure to known irritants or allergens.

2. In some cases, the best treatment is to do nothing to the area.

3. Emollients or moisturizers help keep the skin moist, and also help skin repair itself. They protect the skin from becoming inflamed again. They are a key part of preventing and treating contact dermatitis.

4. Corticosteroid skin creams or ointments may reduce inflammation. Carefully follow the instructions when using these creams. Overuse, even of low-strength over-the-counter products, may cause a skin condition.

5. Along with, or instead of corticosteroids, your health care provider may prescribe drugs called tacrolimus ointment or pimecrolimus cream to use on the skin.

In severe cases, corticosteroid pills may be needed. You will start them on a high dose, which is tapered gradually over about 12 days. You may also receive a corticosteroid shot.

Wet dressings and soothing anti-itch (antipruritic) or drying lotions may be recommended to reduce other symptoms.

Posology = The pharmacological determination of appropriate doses of drugs and medicines

Posology and method of administration

Method of administration: oral.

Adults 50-100mg four times daily.

Adults Starting dose of 25mg at night increasing as necessary to 25mg three or four times daily.

Use in the elderly A reduced dose is advised. This is due to a possible increase in the volume of distribution, prolonged action and the possible effect of age-related changes on pharmacologic functions, including hepatic metabolism and renal excretion (see Section 5.2 ‘Pharmacokinetic properties’)

Use in children From 6 months to 6 years 5-15mg rising to 50mg daily in divided doses and for children over 6 years, 15-25mg rising to 50-100mg daily in divided doses.

As with all medications, the dosage should be adjusted according to the patient’s response to therapy.

Hepatic impairment The total daily dose should be reduced by 33%. Use in patients with severe liver disease should be avoided (see Section 4.4 ‘Special Warnings and Precautions for Use’)

Renal impairment For patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, it is recommended that the total daily dosage should be reduced by 50% (see section 4.4 ‘Special Warnings and Precautions for Use’).

In medical terminology, an “indication” for a drug refers to the use of that drug for treating a particular disease. For example, diabetes is an indication for insulin. Another way of stating this relationship is that insulin is indicated for the treatment of diabetes. Drugs often have more than one indication, which means that there is more than one disease for which it is used. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies indications for drugs in the United States. Indications for drugs can be classified in two categories:

  1. FDA-approved, also called labeled indications, and
  2. Non FDA-approved, also called off-label indications.                                                                                                                                      Sources

Contraindications refers to those conditions, physical, mental or emotional state as well as other signs and symptoms which may be present where a specific drug should not be used. A contraindication indicates that by using the drug in these instances, there is a chance of side effects and complications arising. Drug contraindications should not be ignored as these warnings are based on clinical research and the understanding of the potential pharmacological hazards of certain chemical interactions.

For example : Aspirin is contraindicated in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding.

DermaDrate dry skin treament

okay, today I am going to talk about my first product from my doctor there. DermaDrate Dry skin Treatment, obviously its a dry skin lotion. I used to used Rosken before this. But now I switch to this product because doctor ask so.

It does contain Urea 10% moisturiser

-Urea is a substance that is found naturally in the skin, which by its nature is very attracted to water. It is used to help rehydrate dry, scaly skin.

Dry skin results from lack of water in the outer layer of skin cells known as the stratum corneum. When this layer becomes dehydrated it loses its flexibility and becomes cracked, scaly and sometimes itchy. The stratum corneum contains natural water-holding substances, including urea, which retain water seeping up from the deeper layers of the skin. Water is also normally retained in the stratum corneum by a surface film of natural oil (sebum) and broken-down skin cells, which slow down evaporation of water from the skin surface.

The skin dries out when too much water evaporates from its surface. This increases as we get older, and is made worse by washing, because hot water and soap remove the layer of natural oil on the skin surface.

When urea is applied to the skin it penetrates the stratum corneum, where it readily absorbs and retains water. This increases the capacity of the skin to hold moisture, and the skin therefore becomes rehydrated. The moisturising base that the urea is mixed in also provides a layer of oil on the surface of the skin, which helps prevent water from evaporating from the skin surface. Both actions soothe and soften the skin, and reduce the scaling and itching of dry skin conditions such as eczema and ichthyosis.

Moisturisers are helpful for all dry skin conditions, particularly eczema and dermatitis, which get worse when the skin is allowed to dry out. Used regularly they help restore the skin’s smoothness, softness and flexibility by helping the skin retain moisture.

What is it used for?

  • Chronic dry skin conditions such as eczema.
  • Inherited, non-inflammatory dryness and scaling of the skin (ichthyosis, xeroderma).
  • Overgrowth of the outer layer of skin causing it to become thickened and scaly (hyperkeratosis).

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

By smoothing and softening the skin moisturisers can increase the absorption of other medicines that are applied to the skin. This can be useful in conditions such as eczema because it improves the ability of other medicines, such as corticosteroid creams, to penetrate the skin and reduce inflammation.

However, if they are applied at the same time, moisturisers can also dilute the active ingredient of other medicines applied to the skin, so you should try to avoid applying them within about half an hour of medicated creams, ointments and lotions.

It contains Urea 10% moisturiser and keratolytic, lactic acid 5% keratolytic and Sodium PCA 5% a powerful moisturiser that can bind 80% of its own weight of water from the atmosphere. Sodium PCA is 50% more moisturising than glycerine and 100% more moisturising than propylene glycol.

to be continued….

Another skin disorder, Psoriasis.

My friend who study nurse say that Psoriasis are worse than mine, atopic eczema.

Psoriasis  is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin. It occurs when the immune system mistakes the skin cells as a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious.[1] However, psoriasis has been linked to an increased risk of stroke,[2] and treating high blood lipid levels may lead to improvement.[3] There are five types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic.
